Linda Thomas-Greenfieldthe US ambassador to the UNsaid before the vote that the US, along with Egypt and Qatar, were “working around the clock” on a deal that “will help us deal with this terrible humanitarian crisis.”
He said negotiations were “close, but unfortunately not yet where they should be”. He added that the resolution “will bring us closer to this agreement and help us to ease this pain.”
Benjamin Netanyahu said today that Israel remains determined to send troops into a ground assault on Rafah, the city in the southern Gaza Strip where more than a million Palestinians have been displaced, and that Israel will do so with or without the support of USA.
Netanyahu said in a statement that he told US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during his visit to Israel that there was no other way to defeat the Islamist movement Hamas without the Israeli army advancing on Rafah.
“And I told him that I hope we will do it with the support of the US, but if we have to – we will do it ourselves,” he stressed.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for about 40 minutes, Reuters reports. Ahead of the meeting, Anthony Blinken said he would push for more aid to flow to Gaza and address the growing gap between the two countries.
