Members of the UN Security Council held a closed meeting on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the Sahara. They should be informed by the UN envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and the head of Minurso, Alexander Ivanko.

Prior to these consultations, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Sahara met separately in New York with the representatives of Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario and Mauritania as well as the representatives of France, Spain, Russia, United Kingdom and United States.

The Security Council meeting comes amid growing international support for Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan under its sovereignty.

In December 2020, the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over all of its Saharan territory. Spain, Germany and many other European, African and Arab countries all support Morocco’s territorial integrity and autonomy plan described as the “most serious, realistic and credible” solution to the conflict Sahara region.

According to the UN, De Mistura remains hopeful that a just, lasting and political solution to the Sahara issue, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions, is achievable.

US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman recently called on Algeria – which arms, finances and harbors the Polisario separatist group – to promote stability in the region and support the efforts of the UN envoy to Sahara to advance a lasting political solution to the Sahara conflict.
