UN Security Council votes on Palestine membership

The UN Security Council will vote on Thursday on the Palestinians’ application for full membership in the United Nations. The AFP news agency learned this from diplomatic circles on Tuesday evening (local time). At the beginning of the month, Palestinian UN envoy Rijad Mansour wrote to UN Secretary-General António Guterres asking for the process of full membership for the Palestinians to be resumed.

However, the plan is considered to have little prospect because the USA has spoken out against it – Israel’s ally can veto it. The Palestinians have had observer status at the United Nations since 2012 and have been calling for full membership for years.

The Charter of the United Nations provides that the admission of a state is carried out by a decision of the General Assembly by a two-thirds majority, but only after a recommendation of the Security Council.
