The UN warned on Monday against the “normalization” of the illegal refoulement of refugees at Europe’s borders and denounced the violence and human rights violations that are killing people.
“What is happening at Europe’s borders is legally and morally unacceptable and must stop”, writes the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, to the address of the authorities, adding “fear that these deplorable practices will normalize and become the rule.
A first alert last November
Last November, the head of the UN agency had already spoken about the fate of migrants stranded on the Belarusian side of the border with the European Union and Poland. He had indicated to our colleagues from LCI, to be “worried” for the latter and had denounced “the manipulation of these people in distress” and the “exploitation of their desire for a better life cannot be accepted”. The diplomat had called on all the European countries concerned to “find solutions”.
