Videos circulating on social networks, showing armed individuals – some hooded, others not – shooting at demonstrators, provoked strong reactions. These elements were discussed during a press conference held by the Minister of the Interior Antoine Diome and the Senegalese police.

At the beginning of June, the police presented no less than three videos during this conference, claiming that these armed individuals were among the demonstrators. However, the analysis of the national and international media, in particular that carried out by Senego, indicates that these videos would have been truncated and that the individuals in question were in fact close to the police. These findings have raised questions about the objectivity of the presentation made by the police, but no official clarification has been provided by the authorities to date.

Antoine Diome, the Minister of the Interior, addressed this issue during the visit to the BRT worksites. He acknowledged the existence of controversies and potential untruths surrounding these videos, suggesting that some may have been manipulated.

At the microphone of Senego TV, the minister wanted to make these clarifications: “For a few days, a controversy has settled in Senegal about the broadcasting of certain videos. I would also like to announce here that an investigation has been opened into these files. Each party, or at least each observer, can bring their share of truth, but in the end, it is up to justice to reveal the truth about everything that happened.

He also emphasized the universality of such controversies, mentioning: “Today, browsing the international news, I could observe similar controversies in other countries. »

The Minister urged the population to be cautious about information circulating on social networks, stressing the ease of manipulation of videos: “It’s not one, two, or even three videos, but much more. Everyone knows that when you get a video, you can manipulate it as you wish. It is also obvious that you can make cuts on a video to modify it. Many people in Senegal know how to do this. It is for this reason that I urge everyone to exercise caution.”

Calling for patience while awaiting the results of official investigations, he added: “Let time for experts in the field to carry out the necessary investigations to reveal the truth. If people are not careful, they are likely to be misled, and then the person trying to deceive you will have achieved their goal.”
