Understanding and Coping with Rare Anorectal Anomalies: The Story of Charlie’s Journey

It was one of the happiest days of his life and probably one of the worst too. On August 12, 2022, Vickie Thompson gave birth to her son Charlie, a delivery that went smoothly. But just 10 hours later, the trouble began. The 36-year-old mother was initially worried about not being able to wake her child. “I was absolutely petrified, I thought he was dying”, she remembered, not without emotion. Then, looking in his diaper, she noticed that there was no excrement and that her little one’s urine had an abnormally green tint.

Faced with this situation, doctors carried out extensive examinations which ultimately revealed that he did not have an anal opening, an anomaly that occurs in approximately one in 5,000 babies. Daily mail, Charlie was therefore transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit and the contents of his stomach were removed. The next day he was transferred to Brighton Hospital, where doctors created a stoma for him. This is an opening created in the colon or small intestine to pass stools when they can no longer be passed through natural channels. The stools are then collected in a special bag, stuck to the stomach.

Six surgical procedures

Three months later, the little boy was hospitalized again. The doctors wanted to create an anus for him but the operation did not go as planned. Unfortunately, the procedure failed and caused his first stoma to malfunction, forcing the baby to undergo an ileostomy. This operation involves bringing a piece of the ileum, the lowest part of the small intestine, outside the abdominal wall to create a new stoma. “Charlie became very ill and couldn’t eat for 11 days. He was very vulnerable and suffering from malnutrition,” she confided.

In total, since his birth, the child has already been on the operating table six times and has notably had a large part of his dead intestines removed. According to doctors, he could spend the rest of his life with the stoma. He is currently under increased surveillance.
