There are times when my heart suddenly sinks. Chest tightness is often caused by indigestion or gastritis. However, if you are taking digestive medications and your condition does not improve over time, it may be due to another illness. Learn about illnesses that can be suspected when your chest is tight.

◇Low blood pressure
Low blood pressure refers to cases where the systolic blood pressure is less than 100 mmHg and the diastolic blood pressure is less than 60 mmHg. When low blood pressure occurs, the blood supply to the heart muscle decreases, causing chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Additionally, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and cold hands and feet may occur. In severe cases, your vision becomes dark and you may even pass out, so be careful. To improve low blood pressure, regular meals and loose stools are important. In particular, the intake of vitamin B and folic acid helps maintain normal blood pressure. Vitamin B is found in abundance in fish and dairy products like cheese, milk and yogurt. Folic acid is rich in dark green vegetables like broccoli and spinach. If necessary, consider drug treatment.

◇Myocardial infarction
Myocardial infarction is a disease in which the coronary arteries (blood vessels on the surface of the heart) are blocked and the surrounding muscles die. This causes chest tightness and difficulty breathing. If the pain persists for more than 30 minutes, you may even feel afraid. The most common cause of myocardial infarction is a blood clot blocking a hardened blood vessel. At this stage, chest pain does not go away easily and may progress to heart failure (a condition in which heart function is reduced), so you should seek medical attention immediately. Caution is particularly required in cases of myocardial infarction, because the longer treatment is delayed, the worse the prognosis. To prevent myocardial infarction, it is best to eat mainly vegetarian foods and do moderate-intensity exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Smoking can also cause vascular spasms, so you should refrain from smoking.

◇Panic disorder
A typical symptom of panic disorder is chest tightness. Panic disorder is a condition in which one feels extreme anxiety for no particular reason. If you have panic disorder, you may feel fear, a tight chest, and difficulty breathing. People may suddenly experience nighttime panic attacks while sleeping, during which they suddenly break out in a cold sweat and have difficulty breathing. In fact, people with panic disorder may mistake chest tightness for a symptom of heart disease. When the sympathetic nervous system is overactive, the heart beats faster and oxygen requirements increase, which can lead to myocardial ischemia, but myocardial infarction is rare. Panic disorder is treated with medication and cognitive behavioral therapy. Drug treatment includes antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications, and cognitive behavioral therapy is training that helps change negative memories and emotions. To prevent panic disorder, it is important not to create extreme stressful situations and to believe that the symptoms can be controlled by practicing meditation and breathing techniques.
