There is a chronic health problem, some of whom suffer from night blindness, according to Dr. Othman Zakry, professor of eye surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University.

Othman said that the chronic health problem he was referring to was “high blood pressure,” pointing out the serious complications it causes to eye health, especially the sense of vision.

The professor of eye surgery added that night blindness is a form of poor vision. People who suffer from it face great difficulty in seeing at night or in dimly lit places.

He warned high blood pressure patients against being complacent about the difficulty of night vision, explaining that night blindness associated with high blood pressure is usually a warning sign of cataracts.

Othman explained that retinal vein occlusion is a serious complication caused by high blood pressure in the eye, adding that poor vision is a warning symptom, and the risk of developing it increases in patients with diabetes and cholesterol as well.

He concluded his speech by pointing out the possibility that high blood pressure may lead to complete loss of vision and the inability to restore it with medications or surgery, if it results in damage and atrophy of the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting light signals from the retina to the brain.
