Six billion francs in 2021, the same amount in 2022 and nothing in the following two years. Payments made by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to public authorities fluctuate enormously, depending on developments in the financial markets and the results of the issuing institution. A situation which significantly complicates the budgetary planning of the cantons and the Confederation.

The SNB certainly does not aim to generate profits. But if it makes any, it must distribute part of it to public authorities. The aim is to ensure a constant distribution in the medium term, as stipulated in the National Bank Act (NBA). A goal that seems more and more distant.
