Understanding the Long-Term Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Comprehensive Study

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), commonly referred to as a ‘concussion’, is a chronic condition that can have long-term effects on memory, thinking and daily functioning, a new study has found.

According to a report by Health Day News on the 26th (local time), a research team led by Professor Benjamin Brett, a neurosurgeon at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in the United States, followed up 1110 people who suffered traumatic brain injury for up to 7 years and found this fact.

The research team compared the prognosis of 917 patients with mild brain damage and 193 patients with severe trauma such as skull fractures or penetrating trauma to 154 patients with orthopedic trauma but no brain injuries.

Tests to assess memory, thinking, mental health, and daily living abilities showed that 21% of those who had suffered a mild traumatic brain injury and 26% of those who had suffered a severe brain injury had overall poorer scores on all tests and assessments. By comparison, only 15% of people with orthopedic injuries but no brain injuries had lower test and assessment scores. The areas where test and evaluation scores fell the most were functions related to daily life, such as self-management without assistance, driving a car, and social activities.

However, some patients improved their evaluation scores over time and between 2 and 7 years. 22% of patients with mild brain injury and 36% of patients with severe brain injury improved their scores. In general, the older the person, the lower the evaluation score, and the higher the education level, the higher the evaluation score.

“Our findings challenge the notion that TBI is a one-off event with stagnant outcomes after a short period of recovery,” the researchers wrote.

In the United States, there has been continuous interest in the effects of TBI on the body amidst the effects of sports such as American football and boxing, where strong impacts are continuously applied to the head. In the case of the National Football League (NFL), there have been many cases in which retired players complained of physical abnormalities, and boxers who received a lot of shock and damage to the brain showed symptoms of brain cell damage after retirement, and the term ‘Punch Drunk Syndrome’ was coined. lost too
