Books – Ahmed Gomaa:

The announcement by the Center for Disease Control in the United States of the spread of a new mutant of Corona called “JN.1” raised concern about its symptoms and the extent of its spread in the coming period.

This comes at a time when health experts in the United Kingdom warned of the emergence of a new, mutated strain of the Corona virus that is more transmissible, coinciding with a decrease in infection cases in the United Kingdom, according to what was published in the British newspaper The Sun.

For his part, Dr. Hossam Hosni, Head of the Scientific Committee to Combat Corona at the Ministry of Health, commented on this strain by saying, “Corona still exists, its symptoms are less severe than the symptoms that existed before, and the new variant’s symptoms are not severe.”

He pointed out in statements to Masrawy that the World Health Organization considered that the virus, as a mutant, has less severe symptoms, and the speed of its spread is like other previous variants, “but we take care of it.”

He stressed that the newly introduced vaccines are effective in preventing these variants.

Hosni added: “Our immunity is not the same, and the symptoms differ from person to person. Some people have strong immunity and contain the disease, while others suffer from allergic diseases and are guests of the public or smokers, and therefore their symptoms are greater than the normal symptoms.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the new variant could become a public health problem in Britain, after the JN.1 variant was discovered in the United States, Iceland, Portugal, Spain and France.

In turn, Dr. Wagdi Amin, Director of the Chest Diseases Department at the Ministry of Health, said in press statements that the new Corona variant JN.1 is a mutant version of BA.2.86 and contains 20 mutations on the spike protein, which was a source of great concern when it was first discovered. .

He added that the JN.1 variant accounts for less than 0.1% of coronavirus cases in the United States at the moment, and was first discovered in September 2023 in the United States, and has been detected in 11 other countries.

“Although BA.2.86 and BA.2.1 look very different because of the way the variants are named, there is only one change between JN.1 and BA.2.86 in the spike protein,” he said.

Regarding the presence of new symptoms of the new Corona variant, “Amin” said that, so far, no new symptoms associated with infection due to JN.1 have appeared, and this may be due to the decrease in the number of cases associated with this new variant. Since it is a sub-variant of the Omicron variant, the symptoms that appear It is quite similar to its predecessors.

Regarding the discovery of cases in Egypt, the Director of the Chest Diseases Department stressed that no cases of the virus have been discovered in Egypt.
