This Monday in the Encuentro interview with Julio Villagrán, the Secretary General of SIMETRISSS, Rafael Aguirre, explained that as a union they have denounced improvised situations, for example that of general doctors attending consultations of any specialty of which they do not have sufficient knowledge, in addition to the case of general surgeons performing operations that orthopedists are responsible for doing.
““This situation is really worrying for the population that uses social security and for the workers who ask them for surgeries in which they are not trained,” expresses Aguirre.
Aguirre explains that these problems come from the administration, who are not aware of their workplace; this has been reported to the central administration of local directors, but these complaints have had no effect.
“They have our backs counted, I clock in and clock out, they have asked my boss and the local administration if I come to work… They took away our union permits, it is a right we have… We have had 5 surgeons laid off general without due process”, mentions the Secretary General of SIMETRISSS
Regarding the issue of the health of Salvadorans, 1 in 3 suffer from diabetes or will develop it in the next 5 years. Given this, it is necessary for the health system to improve primary care, starting with general practitioners.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the abandonment of specialist doctors who previously treated emergencies has been noted. These were replaced by general practitioners. Another problem is that the medical protocol is four years behind schedule.
“We know that internationally the norm says that every 2 years the medical, surgical protocols and approach systems must be reviewed, and we have norms that are 4 years behind, that means that there is a problem,” explains Rafael Aguirre.
