Unhappy in Los Angeles
As good as the 80s started for De Niro, they ended badly – namely with three films that all flopped. This frustrated him. The die-hard New Yorker also disliked having to spend so much time in Los Angeles, the center of the film world. He had never liked this city. However, one man managed to sweeten his stay, at least from a culinary point of view. The Japanese sushi chef Nobu Matsuhisa opened a restaurant in Beverly Hills in 1987, where De Niro loved to dine. “I’m not a good cook, so I appreciate good food,” he said. De Niro soon invited Matsuhisa to New York to convince him of his plans: “We’re opening a restaurant together here in Tribeca. You cook and I’ll bring the investors.” But that didn’t happen – for the time being. The Japanese’s doubts were too great.
But the actor couldn’t be dissuaded from the idea of opening his own restaurant in Tribeca. It was very important to him to revitalize the “TRiangle BElow CANal Street” culturally, economically and culinary, as he himself was one of the most famous residents and at the same time one of the most important investors here. In 1990 his dream finally came true when the “Tribeca Grill” opened its doors. From day one, artists, filmmakers, business people and politicians flocked to it Restaurant in der Greenwich Street – and they still do today.
But the gourmet De Niro was not satisfied with that. He still resented having to fly to Los Angeles to enjoy Matsuhisa’s sashimi, his famous toro tartare with caviar, and his black cod in miso. With his characteristic persistence, De Niro managed to guide Matsuhisa to Tribeca four years later. And this culinary project was also a huge success. There are now over 60 “Nobu” restaurants worldwide, 17 of them in Europe.
As successful as Robert De Niro is as an entrepreneur, he has always remained loyal to acting. He recently turned 80 years old. But that’s no reason for him to tone down. He is still in front of the camera many days a year, most recently with Leonardo DiCaprio im Scorsese-Film “Killers of the Flower Moon.” After the premiere in Cannes there was a standing ovation for minutes. And De Niro will soon experience this again in his hometown. Because in September, New Yorkers will celebrate their favorite on the occasion of his birthday. Where? In Tribeca, of course, for three days.
