The United States is dealing with an “out of control” epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases, according to the National Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association.

This warning comes after the release of an annual data report on sexually transmitted diseases by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website also stated, “More than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis have been reported in the United States of America,” according to a report cited by “Science Alert” magazine.

The most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States in 2022 was chlamydia, which has been at the top for years now.

However, it is the recent rise in syphilis rates that has health officials most concerned.

While most people think that adults get sexually transmitted diseases, syphilis also threatens the lives of children. When a baby contracts syphilis from the mother during pregnancy or childbirth, it is known as congenital syphilis.

Syphilis is especially dangerous in children, sometimes causing delayed growth, seizures, or even death.

In adults, syphilis is spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and tends to progress in stages. The primary stage usually includes sores around the mouth or genitals, while the secondary stage can lead to a rash on the body and flu-like symptoms, including This includes fever, headache, sore throat, and fatigue.

According to statistics, the early stages of syphilis are increasing by approximately 10% annually, which is very alarming and threatens the health of children throughout the country.

“Tragically, this infection led to 282 stillbirths and infant deaths in 2022,” wrote Laura Bachmann, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Department of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are calling for “rapid innovation and collaboration” from all public health experts who play a role in preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
