Universidad Católica Santa María Students Win Scholarship in International Human Rights Competition

Two students from the Universidad Católica Santa María won a scholarship to continue their master’s studies at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Spain, following finishing as runners-up in the International Human Rights Competition.

The university students Ana Lucía Amézquita Torres and Luis Paredes Romero competed with 20 teams from different universities in Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru in the Sixth International Oral Litigation Competition, organized by the Alcalá de Henares University of Spain and the Nueva Granada Military University of Colombia.

The participants addressed a hypothetical case on an issue related to the environment, where a state tries to eradicate poppy crops and destroys the fields of indigenous communities, violating human rights. The case was prepared by officials of the National Human Rights Directorate of the Ecuadorian State Attorney General’s Office.

The sessions were held from June 19 to 23 in the city of Alcalá, a competition where the Arequipa students were runners-up for their outstanding defense.

The Arequipa students were trained by professors from the Santa María University, Diego Sánchez and James Fernández.
