Scientist Matthew Pace linked dementia to a reduction in deep stages of sleep – study lasted 17 years

After 17 years of observation, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Monash University in Australia, Matthew Pace, concluded that the quality and duration of sleep influence the occurrence of dementia. The scientist’s discovery was reported in the journal JAMA Neurology, writes SM-News.

“We found that people with greater declines in slow-wave sleep over time had the highest risk of developing dementia over the last 17 years of follow-up,” says the Australian researcher.

The scientist is confident that the slow phase of sleep is of great importance for health, since it is during this phase that harmful materials are processed, including beta-amyloid protein, which is characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Earlier, psychologist Sapkin told how to get rid of sleep problems forever.
