It is one of those disappearances that has never been elucidated despite extensive research. Elke Wevers disappeared on December 9, 2010 on her way to work in Maaseik. She was 32 years old. A new track has been studied since Wednesday.

The excavations focus on a portion of the Zuid-Willemwaart canal in Voorshoven (Maaseik). According to Het Belang van Limburg, the underwater drone of a private individual would have believed to detect at the bottom of the water what looks like a skull. Hence this operation which involves the police and civil protection. An exclusion perimeter has been defined.

This disappearance file is one of some 800 files still open within the disappearances unit of the federal police.

On December 9, 2010, Elke Wevers was supposed to go to work at the hospital in Maaseik where she was executive secretary. She had to walk to a crossroads where a colleague would have picked her up by car to get to work. Elke Wevers did leave her apartment in Neeroeteren but, a few minutes later, she sent an SMS to this colleague in which she wrote: “I don’t feel well today, I’m going home”. She no longer gave any trace of life.

Her boyfriend was once under suspicion because he had failed the polygraph test.

In the evening, her boyfriend Tom notified Elke’s parents, who called the police. Many avenues have been explored over the years. Act of desperation? Want to change your life? Kidnapping ? Accident. In December 2011, Tom was arrested, in part because he failed the polygraph test. He will remain in prison for a fortnight.

Tracks in Sweden and France

A track led to Swedish Lapland. In November 2015, a resident of Maaseik who had just moved there was arrested for a murder. He was interned after his trial. He had once lived in the same building as Elke.

Another track led in 2017 to France. It had been launched by a private detective working for the parents of Elke Wevers. He believed that his body could have been buried near a castle in Meaux (France). The author of the crime would be a plumber, a neighbor of Elke who had then carried out renovation work in a castle in Meaux. This track, favored by Elke’s parents, was considered not very credible by the investigators.

They never closed the case. In the spring, VRT Television produced a docu-series in four episodes to try to relaunch the investigation. Justice gave the green light and collaborated with the directors. Each episode ended with a call for witnesses. Twenty calls led to verifications. But none led to a breakthrough.
