Jamestown: The small, wooden-palisaded hamlet where the first 104 citizens sent by Britain’s Virginia Company established a primitive settlement in 1607 resembles an archaeological site. It was not until 1994 that a research team discovered the remains of the first British fort on what is now the United States. “Since then, more than four million artefacts have been recovered that tell an exciting story,” reports archaeologist Dr. Amy Stallings her German guests on a guided tour. The finds exhibited in the museum document how hard and full of privation life as a settler began. Only sparsely equipped with food supplies, the pioneers quickly came into conflict with the local indigenous population in their struggle for survival. Unearthed graves indicate that starvation, brackish water and disease drove the death rate to 70 to 80 percent in the first decade. Only a significant increase in the number of immigrants, the discovery and processing of iron ore, the cultivation of tobacco, expanding agriculture and the expulsion of the indigenous tribes brought regarding a turning point.
