Actually everything was completely normal. Well, as normal as it can be before the opening game of a World Cup. Amazon Prime accompanied the DFB team during the tournament and is now broadcasting various snapshots from the inner workings of the German team in the documentary series “All or Nothing”.

A few hours before the opening game against Japan, national coach Hansi Flick received a controversial message from Bastian Schweinsteiger. The scene initially shows Flick preparing an analysis session; a training session of his team can be seen on a screen. When the trainer has completed the preparations, he picks up his smartphone in the meeting room.

“Schweini is just writing to me that we are talking about the annoying topic today”

“The pig is just writing to me that we are talking about the annoying topic today,” Flick quotes the message to the room. The German head coach walks through a row of chairs. An employee from the DFB team laughs briefly and says, referring to Schweinsteiger’s text message: “It’s a blast.”

Background: The “One Love” armband caused tense discussions at the time and the headlines were full of it. The rainbow-colored armband should speak out against any form of discrimination. Included was a clear statement against the exclusion of LGBTQ+* people, but also against racism and anti-Semitism.

FIFA bans sanitary pads – “miserable discussion” about “One Love” sanitary pads

FIFA ultimately stopped this form of protest and wanted to take tough action with a point deduction if it was enforced. The selections from Germany, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Wales, France, Denmark as well as Norway and Sweden, both of which did not qualify for the World Cup, wanted to take part in the protest, but then decided not to due to FIFA’s measures.

“You have miserable discussions. Even at lunch on game day you discuss with coaches or players what is right, what is not right or how things could have gone. “This is incredibly disturbing because there was no focus, no mood or joy in this game,” comments Dr. Stephan Nopp, assistant coach game analysis. “The only theme was: ‘How can we…?’ ‘What action do we do?’ It all actually fizzled out. Everything bounced off this discussion.”

Because of the “One Love” discussion? DFB team lost their opener against Japan

After Ilkay Gündogan took the lead 1-0 with a penalty, the game against Japan was lost 2-1. Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano, known from the Bundesliga, scored for the Blue Samurai. The rest is known. Germany was eliminated in third place early in the group phase. (aoe)
