The United States Department of Labor fined franchises after certifying children’s information that they would even be working without any pay.

The fine that must be paid amounts to 212,544 dollars (that is, more than 978 million Colombian pesos), it was imposed on the three franchises that operated 62 locations in the states of Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio.

It is worth saying that the two ten-year-old boys worked until the wee hours of the morning (2 am) without receiving any type of financial compensation and driving dangerous machinery, such as fryers, something that US labor law prohibits for children under 16 years of age.

The rest of the minors, many of whom are between 14 and 15 years old, worked more hours than allowed for their age, a maximum of three when they are in the school day, since they cannot work more than 18 hours a week, while on vacation, a 40-hour work week is allowed.

And according to what is stated, the schedule of adolescents began before and ended after what the legislation of that country allows for minors. Some even worked during their school hours.

The district director of the Division of Wages and Hours in Louisville in Kentucky, Karen Garnett Civils, lamented that “too often, employers violate child labor laws that protect young workers.”

Under no circumstances should a ten-year-old child be working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens, and deep fryers. We are witnessing an increase in violations of federal legislation on child labor,” he said.

“We are seeing an increase in federal child labor violations, including allowing minors to operate equipment or handle types of work that endanger them or employ them for longer hours or later in the day than the law allows. federal,” Garnett-Civils said.

“An employer who hires young workers has to know the rules. An employer, parent, or young worker with questions can contact us so we can help them understand their obligations and rights under the law.” added the senior official.

For his part, one of the supervisors of one of the chains assured that the two ten-year-old boys had attended the premises to visit their father, a night supervisor, according to a statement.

In the same way, the supervisor wanted to clarify that “any type of ‘work’ was done under the supervision and with the presence of his father”, adding that they did not have any authorization from their superiors.

It is worth mentioning that the United Nations Organization, UN, commemorates the World Day against Child Labor, every June 12. According to figures from the agency, 160 million children are in child labor, which represents 1 in 10 children worldwide. Some of them with only 5 years of age.
