“US-India Relations in the Face of Growing China-Russia Rivalry”

US President Joe Biden’s administration has ditched public criticism of India as Washington plans to win New Delhi over to its side in a rivalry with China. This is reported Bloomberg with reference to American officials.

The interlocutors of the agency argue that the pressure of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on religious minorities, the media and opposition representatives has repeatedly “caused alarm” in Washington. However, due to American concerns about the rapprochement between China and India, members of the Joe Biden administration decided to refrain from criticizing Narendra Modi. As Bloomberg notes, this decision indicates that Mr. Biden’s position on the issue of human rights “faced with the realities of the world”, where China and Russia compete with the United States.

Strong ties between Moscow and New Delhi in the defense sphere, as well as large-scale deliveries of Russian oil to India, have repeatedly attracted the attention of the American side. However, the US refused to impose sanctions on India for buying Russian oil. US officials say rivalry with China has brought the US even closer to India.

To express his commitment to strengthening US-India relations, Joe Biden will meet with Narendra Modi in Washington this summer. At the same time, the agency writes, Mr. Biden may put pressure on the Indian Prime Minister to take a clearer position on the conflict in Ukraine.

The Washington Post, citing US intelligence data, wrote that some countries, including India, do not want to take one of the sides in the conflict between the US and Russia, as they seek to benefit from this confrontation. According to the publication, India is afraid to take the position of the American side due to cooperation with Russia in the fields of energy and economy.
