DUBAI: Provocative US right-wing columnist Tucker Carlson has criticized the US government for its failure to advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza and Ukraine, saying the nation is ‘losing its moral authority’ .

Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Monday, the former Fox News political columnist stressed the need for the United States to refrain from supporting wars solely for its own interests, a strategy commonly referred to as “war vicarious”.

“If you see a nation with awesome power that encourages war for its own sake, you have a leader who has no moral authority, who is illegitimate,” Mr. Carlson said.

“(The United States) has always been a morally superior country. (But) if we allow our leaders to use our power to spread destruction for the sake of the country, it is a shame.”

Known for his long-standing criticism of the domestic and foreign policies of President Joe Biden’s administration, Mr. Carlson stands out for opposing Republican support for Israel in its “self-defense” against Hamas.

In an interview with Egyptian journalist Emad Eldin Adeeb, Mr Carlson expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of US politics, calling Mr Biden incompetent and criticizing the lack of freedom to openly debate these issues .

“The president is an unconscious threat and (…), in my country, it is considered very rude to say that. How did we end up with an incompetent president who brought down not only the standard of living, but also life expectancy?,” Mr. Carlson said.

Offering a comparative analysis of living standards, he discussed his recent trip to Moscow, a city of 13 million, which he found “much cleaner, safer and more aesthetically pleasing” than many cities in the United States. United.

“Isn’t that the ultimate criterion for evaluating leadership?” he asked. “(Take cities like) Singapore, Tokyo, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These cities, despite what we are told about their management and their principles, are places where it is good to live, where there is no galloping inflation (and) where we do not risk to be raped.”

Commenting on his recent interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a rare concession by the Russian leader to a Western journalist, Mr. Carlson discussed criticism he has faced for failing to address issues such as freedom of speech. expression or accusations of political assassination.

He made it clear that his goal was to understand the world from Putin’s point of view, rather than amplifying Putin’s version of history.

In defense of the interview, Mr. Carlson accused President Biden of not understanding history and international relations, saying that American policymakers wrongly believe that Mr. Putin intends to expand the borders of the Russia.

According to the American editorialist, Mr. Putin clarified during the interview that his intention to invade Ukraine was triggered by the fact that American Vice President Kamala Harris had openly invited Ukraine to join the NATO, a privilege that had been denied to Mr. Putin years before.

Mr. Carlson believes that this initiative is “synonymous with a plan to place nuclear weapons (on the border) with Russia”.

Citing censorship in the American media landscape, Mr. Carlson claimed to be the only voice to emphasize the importance of NATO’s invitation in the context of a potential conflict.

“This shows how constipated, restricted and censored the American media landscape is,” Carlson said. “But I’m the only one who said it.”

“The goal of diplomacy is to reach a peaceful and mutually beneficial conclusion — one hopes — to a crisis,” he added.

“If you voluntarily show up at the Munich Security Conference and say, ‘Hey, Zelensky, why don’t you allow us to put nuclear weapons on the Russian border?’ you’re heading towards a war because you know that’s the red line.”
