US Launches Strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island Ahead of Election

On Monday, the United States launched limited military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to officials who spoke with CBS and reported by the BBC. The targeted actions triggered several explosions on the island, Iranian state news agency IRNA confirmed, marking a fresh escalation in a conflict that began on February 28.

The BBC contacted US Central Command for comment on the operation. Qeshm Island, situated at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, houses critical infrastructure including an underground missile and naval base alongside a major desalination plant, as noted by the sources.

The operation unfolded alongside reports of covert actions over preceding weeks. The Wall Street Journal reported that Washington maintained a series of secret, scaled-down strikes to avoid signaling a broader resumption of military campaigns.

Political Pressures Ahead of Midterm Elections

The timing coincides with the US midterm elections, which will decide congressional control between Republicans and Democrats. President Donald Trump has faced declining poll numbers and internal party pressure to resolve the ongoing conflict. Speaking to Axios earlier on Monday, Trump asserted he was in no rush to expand operations. “One way or the other, we will do something, but there is no rush. We crippled them financially,” he said, adding that Iranian citizens are exhausted by economic strain. He also said, I don’t know if you even call it a war, because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months, according to the Associated Press.

Amid speculation regarding post-election military escalations, Trump told reporters “no” when asked directly if significant strikes would resume after Tuesday. However, tensions remain complicated by international diplomacy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly pressed Trump during a Saturday telephone call to consider fresh military action following the midterms, described by sources as a tough and direct exchange.

Diplomatic Channels and Nuclear Posturing

Parallel to military friction, diplomatic channels remain active. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed IRNA that intensive negotiations are underway with the United States via mediators. Araghchi stated that Tehran is prepared for both diplomatic and military scenarios, framing the choice as resting entirely on Washington.

Adding to the diplomatic push, US Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism on Monday regarding a negotiated settlement. Vance noted that administration officials had engaged in productive conversations with Iranian counterparts, pointing toward potential resolutions. Trump said the letter focused on helping Iran with “medical supplies and various things”. Meanwhile, Trump also remarked to Fox News that the US might target “Pickaxe,” a site linked to Iran’s nuclear program, claiming such an action could be completed in an hour.

Supreme Leader Posture and Future Threats

Iran’s Supreme Leader made remarks in a meeting with military chiefs regarding the kind or level of threat from America in the future, saying it would be one without geographical limits, according to Iranian state media.
