According to the UN, the border between Mexico and the USA was the most dangerous land route in the world for migrants last year. In 2022, the death or disappearance of 686 migrants were documented at the border, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday in Geneva. This corresponds to almost half of all 1,457 migrants whose deaths or disappearances were registered on the American continent last year.
However, the actual number of dead and missing in the US-Mexico border area is likely to be significantly higher, the organization added. In many cases, official data from forensic experts in the border region of the US state of Texas and from the Mexican authorities are missing.
Half of the deaths recorded by the IOM figures occurred in the Mexican desert regions of Sonora and Chihuahua, with 307 people dying there alone. The IOM said the “alarming” figures reflected the “fatal consequences” of the failure of several states to ensure safe and legal migration routes.
