There is a curious topic to talk about at the US Open.

Some tennis stars report that the facility smells of marijuana.

The smell probably comes from an adjacent park.

Wimbledon is known for grass at the Grand Slam tournaments, but now cares also at the US Open Grass that causes a stir among tennis cracks – albeit of a different kind. During the early days of the tournament, several pros noticed that the New York City facility smelled of marijuana.

“I smelled it in training. It’s worse at the training grounds,” said Tatjana Korpatsch (WTA 75). The German went on to say she couldn’t breathe because of the smell. “I can no longer play and have to go in a different direction,” said Korpatsch. She likes everything about New York. “Except when marijuana is smoked. I hate that smell,” said the 28-year-old.

Zverev with humor – Sakkari angry

Her compatriot Alexander Zverev (ATP 12) was less bothered by the special smell when he won the first round against Australian Aleksandar Vukic. “The grass smells good,” said the 2020 US Open finalist, laughing. Zverev said the stench was “literally everywhere”. ‘The whole place smells like weed. Court 17 smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room,” said the 26-year-old.

The Greek Maria Sakkari (WTA 8) found the whole thing less funny. In her surprising bankruptcy against the Spanish-Swiss Rebeka Masarova (WTA 71), the 28-year-old mocked the smell during the game and even complained to the referee about it.

smell from the park

At the press conference, she said afterwards: “I think it comes from the park next door. Sometimes you smell food, sometimes you smell cigarettes, sometimes you smell weed.” But Sakkari didn’t want to blame her defeat on that. “We can’t control that because we’re in a public space. People can do what they want », pushed the Greek afterwards.

Selling recreational marijuana has been legal in New York since late 2022. Last year, tennis bully Nick Kyrgios noticed the smell of grass in a grandstand at the US Open. The Australian complained to the referee during his game at the time, saying he was asthmatic and the smell was causing him problems.
