Witnesses and local accounts noted that guests had gathered in a home for a traditional ceremony when the roof caved in. Iranian state television later reported that a 22-year-old woman injured in the blast died at a hospital, raising the total reported death toll to five. Other victims included Zardkhatun Taheri, Kolsoum Fallahi-Molla, and two young boys, Amir Mohammad Karimi and Mohammad Mallahi.
Weapons Analysis Points to a Direct Hit by U.S. Munition
An analysis of images and video verified by Channel3000 indicates that the devastation likely resulted from a direct hit by a U.S. munition rather than a ricochet off another target. Four military weapons experts who reviewed the visual material concluded that the damage was consistent with a direct impact on the building’s roof rather than secondary damage from a stray projectile.
Three of the experts identified the weapon as likely a U.S. 500-pound airdropped munition. Trevor Ball, a former U.S. Army explosive ordnance disposal technician and current weapons technical analyst for Armament Research Services, stated that the blast damage could not have resulted from fragments originating from a separate target. Gareth Collett, a retired British Army brigadier and explosives engineering specialist, noted that the weapon may have simply missed its intended objective, adding that given the number of bombs that have been dropped, this does occur from time to time even with the most sophisticated guidance systems.
Sebastian Schutte, a research professor at the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, Norway, also reviewed the visual evidence and agreed that the impact angle was inconsistent with an errant air defense missile.
Proximity to Targeted Telecommunications Tower
U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed that the U.S. military carried out airstrikes in the area of Kuhestak on Tuesday, specifically targeting the town’s telecommunications tower. Satellite imagery showed that the tower is situated approximately 150 yards away from the wedding celebration site. Iranian media reported that the tower was struck at about 9:30 p.m. local time.
Following the incident, U.S. officials stated that the government is evaluating various scenarios regarding the casualties, including whether they resulted from a direct U.S. strike, an Iranian air defense missile ricochet, or an errant interceptor. The U.S. military maintained that it is aware of the reports from Iran but emphasized that it never targets civilians.
