“The United States strongly encourages the international community not to endorse the junta’s plans for fraudulent elections next year,” Blinken said at a regional meeting of foreign ministers in Cambodia.
“Those elections cannot be conducted freely and fairly under current conditions,” Blinken said at the ASEAN meeting. where high-ranking diplomats of the Burma Army are barred from participating due to failure to negotiate with the opponent
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday expressed his desire for the junta to succeed in a proposed August election. 2023 during discussions with high-ranking generals in Naypyitaw
Lavrov also said Russia supported the military government’s efforts to stabilize the country.
Blinken stated that Lavrov’s visit is against ASEAN leading diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. He also called on the international community to increase economic pressure. and do more to stop the flow of weapons and revenue to the military government.
Myanmar’s gas and energy sector continues to escape sanctions. But last month the United States said ‘all options are on the table’, the announcement comes days after the junta sparked fresh international outrage over the execution of four inmates as a punishment. The country’s first execution in decades.
The isolated junta and many Western sanctions have turned to Russia and its allies China. It has been accused by human rights groups and UN experts to arm the Burma Army with weapons being used against civilians.
