USA Midterm Elections: how to track my vote online after voting

Thanks to technology, democracy has benefited from new tools to track vote-by-mail ballots, either to see if the ballot is on its way to your address or if it arrived safely once it was mailed.

How does ballot tracking work?

Each ballot is given a specific number and most states, with the help of the United States Postal Service (USPS), send out ballot envelopes with a unique set of numbers for each individual voter. Those numbers are often known as smart mail barcodes, which allow the USPS to track the ballot.

This code allows states and localities to use ballot tracking websites. However, the tracking technology is not automatic, so you will need to register through your state’s voter website in order to track your ballot. You will also need to enter some basic information on the website, including your name, date of birth, and zip code.

Tracking sites vary in what they do, as some states display updates for each step of the vote-by-mail process, while others simply indicate that a ballot was “sent” or “received” by local election officials.
