THE ANGELS – The USC women’s volleyball team (10-4, 4-0 Pac-12) collected its ninth straight win in a four-set victory (19-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-15) over Colorado (9-6, 1-3) at Galen Center on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 1. The Women of Troy extended their season-long win streak to nine matches; the longest by the team since it had a 22-match win streak to open the 2015 season.

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. OH Skylar Fields led all players with 23 kills (6e, 37att) and .459 hitting to go with one dig and one block. It was her 43rd time in double-digit kills as a Trojan and her 24th time over the 20-kill mark.
Jr. S My Tuaniga put up 45 assists to go with six digs, a season-high five service aces, three kills, and a block. Tuaniga’s five-ace output was her fourth-career match with five aces or more.
Gr. OPP Kalyah Williams tallied 10 kills (4e, 16att) with .375 hitting and had two blocks.
Jr. OH Katelyn Smith had eight kills (1e, 14att) and hit .500.
Sr. MB Lindsey Miller scored on seven kills (2e, 16att, .312) with two blocks and a service ace.
On defense, So. LIB Gala Trubint had nine digs and two service aces to go with seven assists. Gr. DS Ellie Snook had 10 digs for her seventh match in double-digits this season and added two service aces and three assists.
For the Buffaloes, Maya Tabron led with nine kills and had five digs. Cayla Payne logged eight kills with three blocks. Taylor Simpson had 31 assists, five digs, and three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC had the edge in kills (59-37), assists (56-36), service aces (11-3), and digs (38-27). The Trojans reached double-digit service aces for the fourth time this season and for the fourth time in the last six matches.
The teams were tied 12 times in the first set, but the score changed hands four times, the last of which went the Buffaloes’ way for a 25-19 win. OH Dani Thomas-Nathan led the Trojans with four kills but CU’s .619 hitting (14k, 1e, 21att) and three blocks helped the Buffs pull away to take the opening frame.
The Trojans fought back to take a 25-16 win in the second set. Trubint served USC through a 6-0 run that would all but put an end to the set. Fields had six kills and Williams added three to go with four Trojan service aces (two from Trubint).
USC had its first five-point lead of the third set at 14-9 and wasn’t threatened on the way to a 25-20 win for a 2-1 lead in the match. Fields racked up seven kills without an error to power the Trojans to .294 hitting in the third. Smith added four kills and USC finished the set with another pair of blocks.
The Women of Troy went wire-to-wire with the lead in the fourth set. Fields stayed hot and hit .500 with nine kills while Williams added four more. Tuaniga served a pair of aces and set the Trojans to .536 hitting with 15 assists in a 25-15 win.
