Utah Mammoth vs. Vegas Golden Knights: First Round Preview

The Utah Mammoth and Vegas Golden Knights are set to face off in the first round of the 2026 NHL playoffs, marking a historic postseason debut for the expansion Mammoth and a bid by the defending champions to repeat. The series, which begins April 16 in Las Vegas, pits two teams with contrasting trajectories against each other as the league’s newest franchise seeks to develop an early statement.

Vegas, winners of the Stanley Cup in 2023 and 2024, enter the playoffs as the Western Conference’s second seed with a 52-20-10 record, while Utah clinched the eighth and final playoff spot in the West with a 41-31-10 finish. The Mammoth became the first expansion team since the Vegas Golden Knights in 2018 to reach the playoffs in their inaugural season, a feat achieved through a strong second-half surge that included a 19-8-3 record after the All-Star break.

“We believed in our process all season,” said Utah head coach Andre Tourigny after clinching the playoff berth. “Getting here is just the start. Now we go to Vegas and see what we’ve got.” Tourigny, who previously led the Arizona Coyotes to the playoffs in 2020, becomes the first coach to guide an expansion team to postseason play in its first year since Gerard Gallant did so with Vegas in 2018.

Golden Knights Rely on Experience and Depth

Vegas returns a core that has won two of the last three Stanley Cups, led by Jack Eichel, who recorded 92 points (36 goals, 56 assists) during the regular season, and Adin Hill, who posted a 2.45 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 48 starts. The Golden Knights also added veteran presence at the trade deadline, acquiring Tomas Hertl from San Jose to bolster their center depth.

“We know what it takes to win in April and May,” said Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy. “Experience matters, especially when the games get tight. But we’re not taking anyone lightly. Utah earned this.” Cassidy, who won the Jack Adams Award in 2023, has guided Vegas to the conference finals in each of the last three seasons.

The Golden Knights averaged 3.4 goals per game during the regular season, ranking fifth in the NHL, while allowing just 2.6 goals per game, the third-best mark in the league. Their power play converted at a 22.8% rate (10th in NHL), and their penalty kill ranked eighth at 81.4%.

Mammoth Rely on Goaltending and Balanced Attack

Utah’s postseason hopes hinge heavily on the performance of 25-year-old goaltender Karel Vejmelka, who finished the season with a 2.78 GAA and .907 save percentage in 58 appearances. Vejmelka recorded six shutouts and posted a 1.95 GAA in his final 12 games, helping the Mammoth secure their playoff position.

Offensively, Utah was led by Clayton Keller, who tallied 78 points (28 goals, 50 assists), and Logan Couture, acquired at the deadline, who added 14 points in 19 games after joining from San Jose. The Mammoth ranked 18th in the league in goals per game (2.9) but improved to 10th in shots allowed per game (28.6) after Tourigny implemented a more structured defensive system in February.

Special teams were a key factor in Utah’s late-season rise: their power play jumped from 19.1% to 22.4% after the All-Star break, and their penalty kill improved to 80.2% in the second half, up from 76.5% in the first half.

Head-to-Head History and Series Outlook

This will be the first playoff meeting between the franchises. In the regular season, Vegas won both matchups, defeating Utah 4-2 on October 14 and 3-1 on January 11. However, the Mammoth have won three of their last five games against Western Conference playoff teams, including victories over Dallas and Winnipeg.

Analysts note that Utah’s best chance lies in forcing Vegas into a high-tempo, chaotic game that disrupts the Golden Knights’ structured puck possession style. Conversely, Vegas will look to control the pace, limit Utah’s transition opportunities, and rely on their superior playoff-tested roster to wear down the expansion side over the course of a seven-game series.

The winner of this series will advance to face either the Edmonton Oilers or Los Angeles Kings in the second round. Game 1 is scheduled for April 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Game 2 following on April 18. If necessary, Games 6 and 7 would return to Utah on April 28 and April 30, respectively, at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

As the NHL’s newest franchise seeks to defy expectations in its first postseason appearance, the series represents a test of whether expansion success can be sustained beyond the initial novelty season — or whether the Golden Knights’ championship window remains open through experience and execution.
