UTRGV School of Medicine Launches Specialization Program to Address Lack of Specialists in the Rio Grande Valley

The UTRGV School of Medicine in Edinburg is preparing a specialization program in the field of medicine.

According to a study by the ‘Rio Grande Development Council’, in 2018, of a thousand patients referred to a medical specialist, between 80-90 percent did not see a specialist.

For this reason, this Friday, March 15, more than 200 medical students received the news about the university where they will be able to study a specialization.

This is the case of Samuel Álvarez, a student who will know where he will be studying a specialty in the field of medicine for the next four years.

The program will also benefit at least 200 other UTRGV medical students who will be doing the same.

For his part, Álvarez will be studying psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco, Fresno —

“Mental health is something that is not talked about much, especially in the Hispanic community, so I believe that having a psychiatrist who speaks Spanish, who shares the culture, is very important,” commented Álvarez.

Álvarez is the first in his family to graduate from college and study medicine. “It is a great achievement, not only for me but for my parents who are first generation immigrants,” added Álvarez.

Samuel Álvarez’s parents are in Dallas. The Pope could not attend because he had to be at work, and his mother is retired.

According to Michael Hocker, chancellor of the UTRGV School of Medicine, there is a lack of doctors with a specialty in the Valley.

“When you look at doctors per capita in the lower part of the country, especially in the Valley, we are missing a lot of specialties here,” Hocker said.

While for Álvarez, the love and how they endured him throughout the school was a support, which the truth was what helped him continue later.

This Friday’s ceremony occurred at many other universities in the United States at the same time: 11 a.m. Central Time.

Medical students enter a very competitive process, where students rank specializations and put the information into an algorithm through a national program that uses that information to assign the student to a medical school with their specialization.
