Vacation Nightmare: Scams and Frauds in North Sea Rentals

The North Sea… Its kilometers of fine sand beaches, the cries of the seagulls in the early morning, the smells of waffles, its soulless buildings, the kids on the cuitaxes… Leila from Brussels and Christelle from Liège dreamed of spending a week of family vacation in this maritime atmosphere.

These two mothers were wrong to look for a rental on the Marketplace site of a well-known social network. “I was very interested in this announcement and I paid a deposit of 300 euros,” says Leila. She had contact with the tenant of the apartment with a sea view, in the town of Blankenberge. “On the day of departure, he no longer answered the phone.”

The mother and her children found themselves in front of the apartment, with dozens of bags, without knowing what to do. “It is not within our means to go on vacation to France. We liked this apartment, but we had to find an alternative solution. Finally, I rented another apartment, more expensive and with a rental guarantee”.

Camping in the dunes

Christelle, whose accent suggests that she lives in the Liège region, experienced the same misadventure. She paid for the rental of an apartment in Middelkerke. “We had to find a date that suited everyone because I was leaving with my children, my sister, my brother-in-law and their children,” she says.

On site, they never received the key to the apartment. “We went camping in the dunes, and a man took pity on us. He helped us find something else, more expensive, on another date. My brother-in-law was forced to change his working hours.” In addition to the 900 euros spent for a week of vacation, Christelle is demanding reimbursement for her train ticket between Liège and Mons.

Jason denied the facts

In law, this is called fraud. The false tenant has been identified, it is Jason, who lives in the Mons region. The man receives a social allowance of two thousand euros monthly and lives with his partner, a minor, and their young child. “When questioned by the police, he denied the facts, stating that he did not have a banking application. He does not explain how this money arrived in his account”.

In fact, the money was paid into Jason’s mother’s account, and quickly withdrawn in cash by the son, who has a criminal record: violent theft, burglary, receiving stolen property… A sentence of one year Prison is claimed against anyone who has not appeared before his judge.

Judgment in January.
