Vandalism at Delhaize Supermarkets: Impact on Social Conflict and Store Closures

2023-08-26 09:20:00

The Delhaize supermarket and Proxy Delhaize in Denderleeuw (East Flanders) were vandalized overnight from Friday to Saturday, confirmed the spokesperson for the retail chain, Roel Dekelver. Two complaints were filed with the police.

The facts took place around 3:00 am and were filmed by surveillance cameras. The Proxy Delhaize was smeared with paint while two supermarket windows were smashed. Paint was also used.

“There will never once more be social peace at Delhaize”

“We regret these facts”, declares Roel Dekelver. “Staff and operators are shocked. This is criminal behavior and vandalism. Delhaize has filed a complaint with the police for the facts at the supermarket. The operator of Proxy Delhaize, which will also soon operate the future supermarket which will be franchisee, did the same for his own store.”

Saturday morning, 14 Delhaize stores are closed, 11 in Brussels and three in Wallonia. The supermarket chain says it is sending bailiffs to have the stores open in Wallonia as quickly as possible and have the facts noted in Brussels.

The social conflict at Delhaize has been going on for several months, with the unions opposing the group’s desire to franchise all of its Belgian supermarkets.
