VAT on gas and electricity at 6%: “We will make the reduction permanent”

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

The extension until March 31, 2023 of this reduced VAT was announced on Wednesday following the Consultation committee on energy prices. According to the socialist, who spoke Thursday morning with the VRT (on Radio 1, De Ochtend program), it was actually decided at the federal level to perpetuate this measure, and therefore not to raise the VAT to 21% followingwards. The decision goes back, according to him, to a kern organized Tuesday evening before the “Codeco”. “We will make the reduction permanent (…) A rate of 21% is unfair, because it is a basic right”.

Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) and Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V) are due to make a proposal by the end of September, which would eventually provide for a different taxation of energy consumption , between small and large consumers, says the Minister. The latter is also expecting an agreement within the same period for the recovery of “surplus profits” in the energy sector.
