The Government of Nicolás Maduro granted Camila Fabri de Saab, wife of Colombian-Venezuelan Álex Saab, imprisoned in the United States, a diplomatic passport despite the fact that the woman does not have Venezuelan citizenship.

As Saab’s wife, this benefit corresponds to her according to the Vienna Convention, however, Fabri is not Venezuelan, so the debate has been opened regarding the legality or not of the process.
The news is known by a ruling of May 12 of the Supreme Court of Justice in which it declares an amparo action filed by Fabri in favor of her husband admissible and in which the Venezuelan State undertakes to follow the proceedings to demand the release of the businessman accused of front man for Nicolás Maduro.
Although covered by the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations of April 18, 1961, jurists and diplomats explained to EL TIEMPO that the delivery of the document should be analyzed because Fabri declares herself an Italian citizen and not a Venezuelan so that aspect would be the reason for a possible irregularity.

However, jurists and members of the Free Álex Saab Movement indicate that there is no defect in the process and that in addition to being the wife of the diplomat (status granted by the Maduro government), Fabri belongs to the official delegation that participates in the dialogue with the opposition.
Indhriana Parada, lawyer and member of the movement in defense of Saab, explains that belonging to the dialogue delegation gives Fabri that status.

Sources confirmed to EL TIEMPO that Saab’s wife has been with the document for quite some time, but did not give further details.
It is up to the Venezuelan administration to clarify the legality mechanism on the nationality and correspondence of this type of passport.
