Venus Is the Hottest Planet With a Slow and Inverted Rotation

Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system, characterized by a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere that traps heat and clouds of sulfuric acid. According to Nasa, the planet’s surface is active with volcanoes and mountains, and it rotates in the opposite direction of Earth and most other planets.

The extreme environment of Venus creates a landscape where metals like lead would exist as puddles of melted liquid, according to Nasa. While it is the second planet from the Sun, positioned between Mercury and Earth, its temperature exceeds that of any other planet in the system due to a potent greenhouse effect driven by carbon dioxide.

The 243-Earth-Day Rotation

A single day on Venus—the time it takes to spin once on its axis—lasts 243 Earth days. This rotation is not only slow but inverted; Venus spins in the opposite direction of Earth and most other planets, meaning the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east, according to Nasa.

While a day takes 243 Earth days, a year—the time required to orbit the Sun—lasts only 225 Earth days. Because the day is longer than the year, the solar cycle is stretched; the Sun rises only once every 117 Earth days. This means that during a single Venusian year, the Sun rises exactly two times.

Magellan Radar and Surface Mapping

Directly observing the surface of Venus is nearly impossible because of its thick, cloudy atmosphere. To bypass this, the Magellan spacecraft used radar to penetrate the clouds and gather data on the planet’s physical structure, according to Nasa. These radar images reveal a terrestrial, rocky world with an active surface featuring volcanoes and mountains.

The data collected by Magellan has allowed scientists to identify specific geological features, such as a crater on the surface that measures 45 miles (72 km) wide. Because the atmosphere is so opaque, the colors in published images of the surface are often altered to help researchers distinguish different terrain features.

Spacecraft Missions and Planetary Neighbors

Venus has been visible to humans since ancient times because it can be seen without the aid of a telescope. In the modern era, Nasa reports that several spacecraft have visited the planet to study its composition and atmosphere, including Mariner 2, Mariner 5, Mariner 10, Pioneer Venus 1, and Pioneer Venus 2, as well as the Magellan orbiter.
