The verdict is in. Mickaël Van Haute is sentenced to 30 years of criminal imprisonment for the murder and rape of Néva, 22 months old.
It is also made available to the sentence enforcement court for a period of five years.
The security measure is 15 years.
The court and the jury, meeting as a panel, did not consider any mitigating circumstances. They noted the extreme seriousness of the facts of the crime and the rape, committed against a minor who had confidence in him, but also the risk of repeat offenses and dependence on alcohol and drugs.
His place is in prison
These four days of trial seemed long for the accused, a man visibly eager to return to the shadows. Head bowed during most of the debates, Mickaël Van Haute declared, from the first day of his trial, that his place was in prison and that he should have been there a long time ago, placing the blame on too lax a justice system. their eyes.
Justice, however, seems to be something secondary to him. Convicted twenty-six times, the majority of which by default, he was content to lie during the investigation, delivering versions contrary to scientific expertise. And then, he refused to participate in the reenactment and never appeared before the council chamber. This week, he simply admitted guilt for the murder, but not for the rape.

On February 1, 2021, his partner placed her trust in him, asking him to look after his two little girls, aged 22 months and 3 years old. Mickaël accepted this mission, confiding however that he feared a fit of tears from Néva, the youngest, very close with her mother. Which is normal for a young child.
But instead of caring for the children, he got drunk and did cocaine. He no longer responded to the mother’s calls, worried, from 7:45 p.m. on February 1, 2021. An hour later, he deigned to answer a call from his godmother, telling her that he was high, stammering that the little ones were lying “but Neva…”
Unmoved by the drama
But Neva… Was the little one already dead? We don’t know it, but the next day, the child was found lifeless, lying on the couch, her face and body covered in bruises. When help arrived, it was too late. Upstairs, another little girl was terrified, but alive, traumatized by what she had seen. Mickaël Van Haute, for his part, was impassive, worrying more about his pack of tobacco and his can of soda than the little ones.
The aftermath is vile, chilling. Not content with having massacred Neva, he raped her. He contested but the forensic doctors were categorical. The traces of sexual abuse date from the night of the events.
