Viaduct Vilvoorde Renovation: 8-Year Project to Improve Traffic Flow and Infrastructure

2023-08-16 04:44:00

The renovation works of the Vilvoorde viaduct have started. Traffic will be disrupted on the inner ring of Brussels from this Wednesday. The large-scale works will last 8 years and will be completed in 2031.

“8 years, we also think it’s very long, but that comes from the fact that every day there are 120,000 cars passing over this bridge and it must be able to accommodate this traffic daily. It’s a bit as if, at some point, you had to totally renovate your house, the heating system and you had to organize yourself to continue living like this. We will work in sections and we will start with a quarter of the area to be treated. It will last until September, October, maybe even a little more. And so, we will make sure that the situation disturbs people as little as possible and that nuisances are reduced to a minimum”explains Marijn Struyf, works manager.

The asphalt, the steel load-bearing structure on which the concrete slab rests, the paint containing asbestos on the load-bearing structure, the guardrails and the lighting must be renovated. A new concrete slab will also need to be laid under the asphalt.

The objective is to maintain traffic on the viaduct as much as possible since it is a very important axis, both for national and international traffic. It was therefore decided to carry out the work in several stages. During each phase, only part of the bridge will be unavailable. Traffic can then continue on the other lanes, where the speed will be reduced to 50 km/h.

The renovation will make it possible to open a fourth lane on the viaduct, in each direction. The cost of the project is estimated at 435 million euros. In 2019, during a first study, the project was still estimated at 100 million euros.
