Other epidemic diseases to be wary of include Murray Valley encephalitis, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and West Nile virus.
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Claire Looker said mosquito numbers had increased and the diseases they carried had changed. There have been 14 cases of Japanese encephalitis recorded in the past 12 months, a rise compared to recent years.
“(Japanese encephalitis) can present with very common symptoms such as fever, muscle aches and pain, but in some rare cases can develop into a more severe neurological disease,” she said.
