The epicenter was near Wattyhouse Station in New Jersey, according to the USGS. No property damage has been reported so far.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) measured the earthquake at 5.5 degrees. The earthquake had a focal depth of 10 kilometers, according to EMSC.
The quake was felt across the region, including New York, New Jersey, northern Pennsylvania and western Connecticut, according to Reuters reporters and according to social media posts.
Charita Walcott, a 38-year-old resident of the Bronx, New York, said she heard “a violent roar that lasted about 30 seconds.”
The FAA, the US Federal Aviation Administration, said many airline flights bound for New York City could be delayed 30 to 45 minutes due to the earthquake.

Friday’s quake evoked memories of the Aug. 23, 2011 earthquake that shook tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada.
It had a magnitude of 5.8 and was centered in Virginia, dozens of kilometers south of today’s, the strongest earthquake on the East Coast since World War II. It caused cracks in the George Washington Monument in the US capital while leading to the temporary evacuation of the White House and the Capitol.
In addition to this quake, in the wider area we had a magnitude 5.1 quake in 1983 in New York State and another magnitude 5 in New York City…in 1884.
