Vienna – On the morning of November 20th, activists of the “Last Generation” blocked several highway entrances; at the beginning of the week of all times. The group wants to draw attention to the climate crisis through its actions. Some activists cemented themselves onto the southern entrance. It happens again and again Clashes during protests. This is also the case on the western entrance to the A2 towards Vienna. A mother stands in tears trying to persuade the group to let her through.

Protest by the “Last Generation” on the Vienna highway brings mother and son to tears

Catharina Goriany was just on the way to take her son to the bus for the school trip. At first she thought an accident had happened, she describes in the interview Puls24. When the traffic jam didn’t move, the mother became more and more nervous and finally got out of the car.

When she realizes that it is a protest, she tries to negotiate with the demonstrators. “Please let us through!” the crying mother repeatedly tries to persuade the activists. Soon despair turns into anger. “Do you want to see it? He sits in the car and cries. “He’s 10 years old,” the mother calls out, pointing to the boy in the car.

The “Last Generation” does not want to make an exception. “The climate emergency is here now and just because we may not see it here as strongly as we see it in the global south does not mean it does not threaten us all. And that also and especially affects her son,” an activist emphasized the importance of the protest, especially for younger people, to a television team that was there.

Mother despairs of road blockade – “Last Generation” sees no alternative

According to their own statements, the activist group discussed whether they should let the mother through. “Of course we would like to let everyone through there. There are certainly a lot of other people back there who have very good reasons why they have to go through it,” says the video contribution from the climate group.

“As soon as someone can tell me how we can more effectively draw attention to the current emergency, which is simply not understood and treated as an emergency, then of course we will do that and stop annoying people. But the fact is that everything else hasn’t worked so far,” the activist continues.

“I have to be honest, it’s the collateral damage,” the mother says Puls24 to the protest. The “Last Generation” does not see the danger that such actions are harmful to climate activism, the angry woman continues. The climate protesters are aware of the resentment among citizens against the group, and they are even willingly accepting it, it is said again and again in statements about it. This is also shown in an X post (formerly Twitter) about the action in Vienna, when the group writes to counter “the traffic and the anger of the people”.

Tears dried, son on school trip, but anger about climate action remains

The mother’s emotional outburst was probably not the only dispute during the action. Elsewhere, protesters were dragged off the streets, kicked and even hit, according to the local breakfast show Café Puls reported. In freezing temperatures, angry drivers also poured water on members of the group.

Eventually a lane was diverted from the highway and the mother was able to turn around. The son arrived 15 minutes late to the bus that had been waiting for him, according to the Austrian media. An inquiry about the situation has so far remained unanswered by “Last Generation”.
