Vienna Philharmonic Ball: Tradition, Elegance, and Musical Excellence

In the Vienna Musikverein we were asked to dance. It was a first for Philippe Jordan – he conducted the event for the first time.

On March 4, 1924, 100 years ago, the Vienna Philharmonic’s very first ball took place.

“In Vienna, the Philharmonic has created a center of the artistic life of orchestral music that brings together all the intellectual, social, scientific and even political personalities of this city,” said Alexander Wunderer (1877–1955), the director of the orchestra at the time, proudly.

Not much has changed to this day, as the concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

Richard Strauss composed the Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare specifically for this in 1924, an Oscar and Grammy winner John Williams’ “Fanfare for Vienna Philharmonic Ball” celebrated its premiere locally in 2023. Both were of course also played on Thursday night. Celebrated his ball debut as a conductor Philip Jordan (also taking over the Bayreuth “Ring” this year).

The Young Women’s and Men’s Committee drew again for the choreography Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer responsible. “We were impressed at the audition because almost everyone was incredibly good,” he said.

A very special debutant is there this year: Constantinthe son of Martin Rohla and Madeleine Rohla-Strausswho is the great-great-grandson of Richard Strauss.
