Vikings running back Alexander Mattison is a victim of racism. The franchise and the NFL react.

Unpleasant news for Alexander Mattison: The Minnesota Vikings running back posted two screenshots of several messages on Instagram in which he was badly insulted.

“Unbelievable… This is not okay. […] You can attack me about fantasy all you want or tell me what a bad player I am. Blah blah blah. I don’t care. But this shit is not acceptable,” he wrote.

He continued: “I hope the 60+ people who decided to attack me with disgustingly disrespectful messages really think about what the hell they said and how it really affected someone. Under my helmet, I’m a Man, a father, a son. That’s just sick.”

In the excerpts that the 25-year-old shared in his story, the senders clearly used racist words. Mattison is also asked to take his own life.

Vikings ‘disgusted by hate towards Mattison’

His franchise has now also commented on the incidents. “We are disgusted by the hatred and racist insults directed at Alexander Mattison after the game,” they said in a statement.

He continued: “There is simply no place for racist words or actions in sports or society. The Vikings will continue to fight to eliminate hate, educate and promote a diverse, equitable and inclusive community that respects our unique backgrounds and appreciates.”

The team stands with Mattison and “all players who unfortunately experience this type of ignorant and prejudiced behavior, and we ask our fans to continue to fight to eliminate racism.”

DeAndre Hopkins (Tennessee Titans)
Is it enough – or not? Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was unable to practice all of last week due to an ankle injury and his status for the duel against the Los Angeles Chargers is “questionable.” However, use is not ruled out. So he explained to US reporters that he felt good. © Imago

Jerry Jeudy (Denver Broncos)
Meanwhile, there is good news for the Broncos. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who suffered a hamstring strain during training with the Rams in August, trained fully throughout the week and can make his season debut in the duel against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. © Imago

Breece Hall (New York Jets)
After Aaron Rodgers, is the Jets’ next important offensive player out? The New York franchise declared running back Breece Hall “questionable” before the difficult away game at the Dallas Cowboys. His commitment will therefore only be decided on the match day itself. Hall ran for 127 yards against the Buffalo Bills.© 2023 Getty Images

C.J. Stroud (Houston Texans)
The Texans are worried about the use of quarterback CJ Stroud before the home game against the Indianapolis Colts. The rookie is suffering from a shoulder injury and was given questionable status after the final training session on Friday. So his stake is open.© 2023 Getty Images

Austin Ekeler (Los Angeles Chargers)
Meanwhile, running back Austin Ekeler from the Chargers is almost certain to miss out. The offensive playmaker received the label “doubtful” before the Californians’ visit to the Tennessee Titans, so his participation in the game is highly doubtful. In his absence, Joshua Kelley is likely to take on a larger role.© ZUMA Wire

Jaycee Horn (Carolina Panthers)
The Panthers, however, were hit on defense; cornerback Jaycee Horn was placed on the injured reserve list due to a hamstring injury and will be out for at least four weeks. © USA TODAY Network

Travis Kelce (Kansas City Chiefs)
Breathe a sigh of relief for the Chiefs: Superstar Travis Kelce will be back in the away game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed this. Avonte Maddox (Philadelphia Eagles)
The Eagles also won the second game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings, but the injury concerns in the defense increased. After cornerback James Bradberry and safety Reed Blankenship were already missing due to injuries, cornerback Avonte Maddox also suffered a shoulder injury in the Thursday night game. His downtime is still unknown. © Icon Sportswire

Cam Heyward (Pittsburgh Steelers)
The Steelers will be without defensive tackle Cam Heyward for weeks. The 34-year-old has to go under the knife because of a groin injury. Head coach Mike Tomlin was unable to say how long he would be out. Heyward has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh and has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the past five years.© ZUMA Wire

Mark Andrews (Baltimore Ravens)
The Ravens can probably count on Mark Andrews again in week two against the Cincinnati Bengals. The tight end has been out for the past few weeks with a hamstring injury, but on Wednesday he was active in training for the first time since the end of camp. However, it is listed as “questionable”.© ZUMA Wire

Aaron Rodgers (New York Jets)
The Jets won the game against the Buffalo Bills, but lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers. What initially looked like an ankle injury turned out to be a torn Achilles tendon. The playmaker faces months of rehab. © USA TODAY Network

J.K. Dobbins (Baltimore Ravens)
Bad news for the Ravens! Running back JK Dobbins (left) was seriously injured in the first half against the Houston Texans. A little later, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed the shock diagnosis of a ruptured Achilles tendon, meaning the 24-year-old’s season was over. This means Gus Edwards and Justice Hill will get the bulk of the carries starting week two.© Getty Images

Marcus Williams (Baltimore Ravens)
The bad news for Baltimore didn’t end there. Safety Marcus Williams (right) suffered a pectoral muscle injury and will be out “for a while,” according to head coach John Harbaugh. Before leaving with the injury in the second quarter, Williams recorded four tackles and fended off a pass.© 2023 Getty Images

NFL remembers the humanity of all players

The NFL also issued a statement “strongly condemning” the news to the ball carrier. Those responsible also added that “such hateful behavior” is “completely unacceptable in the NFL or anywhere else.”

“We stand firmly with Alexander and remind fans to remember the humanity of all players and celebrate their contributions to the game we all love,” the league emphasizes.

Minnesota had previously lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 28:34 and now has a record of 0-2. Mattison was promoted from backup to starter after superstar Dalvin Cook was fired in the offseason.

This season, the running back achieved 62 rushing yards on 19 attempts. He also caught six of ten passes for 21 yards and a touchdown. Against Philly, he also lost a fumble for the first time in the season on the Vikings’ second drive.
