“The Russian ambassador is summoned to the Foreign Ministry tomorrow. Another Russian violation of Danish airspace. This is totally unacceptable and particularly worrying in the current situation,” Jeppe Kofod wrote on Twitter.

The incident took place on Friday evening when a Russian reconnaissance plane flew into Danish airspace east of Bornholm (Danish Baltic island) before entering Swedish airspace, this last part of the episode having been made public by the Swedish defense on Saturday.

“This is a reconnaissance aircraft that was in our airspace for a very short time. Two Danish F-16s immediately intervened,” Danish defense press officer Henrik Mortensen told AFP.

The Russian plane then left Danish airspace.

This type of incident “rarely happens,” Mortensen added.

Unlike Sweden where a debate on the issue is ongoing, Denmark is a member of NATO.
