During the night of Saturday to Sunday, a violent fire ravaged the Carmel of Floreffe. The fire started around 1:45 a.m. in the kitchens and quickly spread to the rest of the building. At lightning speed, the fire reached the two floors to reach the roof.

Fortunately, the building was unoccupied. For a year, the last three nuns who resided there were transferred to a rest home in Salzinnes.

The firefighters of the Val de Sambre rescue zone deployed major resources to overcome it. They had to fight until 6 a.m. to contain the fire. Throughout the intervention, the N90 had to be closed to traffic.

The Namur public prosecutor’s office has been notified and an investigation has been opened to determine the origin of this fire. The hypothesis of an accidental loss has not yet been confirmed. A police raid with dogs is scheduled for Sunday.

The mayor of Floreffe, Philippe Vautard descended during the night on the scene of the incident. He undertook to warn the nuns, still owners of the building and the future buyer of the Carmel, namely the private school “L’école à vivre”, open since 2019 at the Château de Travisée in Fosses-la-Ville. The sales agreement had just been concluded and the notarial deed had to be signed on October 5th.

“It’s obviously a tragedy for the nuns but also for the headmistress of the school who is distraught”, indicates the mayor who adds that the day before the disaster, painting work had been undertaken.
