Former Indian cricket captain Virender Sehwag turned 48, using the occasion to share financial lessons he instills in his Gen Z sons, Aryavir and Vedant. Speaking to digital creator Neha Bedi on The Life Savers Show, the legendary opener addressed the realities of youth materialism and the heavy burden of carrying the Sehwag surname.
The Reality Check Behind Sehwag Household Finances
Sehwag explained how his teenage sons handle wealth as they build their cricket careers. Aryavir currently plays Under-19 cricket, while Vedant features in the Under-16 setup, with both youngsters already earning Rs 2–3 lakh through their respective sporting pathways.
That early financial independence crashed into reality during a routine errand. As Sehwag revealed during his appearance on The Life Savers Show, one of his sons was left shocked when the bill for filling petrol in the family car came out to Rs 7,000.
“My kids have started playing cricket. One plays under 16, and another plays under 19. They are earning Rs 2-3 lakh. Once, one of them filled petrol in the car, and the bill came to Rs 7,000,” Sehwag stated, noting how comfortable his children were when he picked up the tab.
The former skipper addressed the natural tendencies of modern youth head-on. “Bachcha materialistic hote hain. BMW meing jaungi, Range Rover mein jaunga. My son borrows my watches and wears them. Wo abhi Bachcha hai usko materialistic cheezon ka shauk hai. Lekin jab wo ek level par aa jaega na tab usko pata chalega ki ye sab kuch nahi hai life mein. Ye sab ek dikhawe wali life hai,” he explained, translating the transient nature of luxury.
His core philosophy centers on substance over surface appeal. Sehwag noted his constant advice to his sons: “Dikhawe wali life mat jiyo. Asli life jiyo jisme tum kuch karo or log tumhe bole ki wow isne kuch kia hai.”
| Son | Age Group Level | Estimated Early Earnings | Identified Financial Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aryavir | Under-19 Cricket | Rs 2–3 Lakh | First-hand utility bill management (Petrol: Rs 7,000) |
| Vedant | Under-16 Cricket | Rs 2–3 Lakh | Navigating parental watch-borrowing and luxury expectations |
Managing the Weight of a Legendary Surname
Carrying the Sehwag name inside domestic cricket corridors offers visibility, but it introduces an immediate psychological hurdle. Virender Sehwag acknowledged that the path for Aryavir and Vedant involves inevitable comparisons to his own storied international career spanning from 1999 to 2013.
“Unko bachpan se sikhata hu, ‘Bete tumko papa ke sath humasha compare kiya jaega. Tumko criticism bhi milega, but tumko criticism se zaya praise milega. Because bahaut log tumhare father ko chahte hain. Jab tum first class kheloge, international kheloge, tab tumhara comparison hoga. Tab zyada criticism milega. Aapko kuch nahi sochna hai. Apko jo karna hai, jaise karna hai, waise karna’,” Sehwag shared.
To insulate his sons from external noise, the former Arjuna Award and Padma Shri recipient uses a straightforward analogy. He tells them that an elephant remains entirely unfazed by barking dogs, reinforcing that outside commentary should never dictate their focus.
Sehwag currently channels his analytical perspective into hosting Rise and Fall Season 2, keeping a close eye on the sports and entertainment landscape as his sons continue their climb through India’s rigorous junior cricket ranks.
