The family of Groupe Figaro weeklies (Le Figaro Madame, Le Figaro Magazine et TV Magazine) should soon welcome a youngest: the magazine Gala. The Vivendi group announced on Wednesday July 4 that Prisma Media (Geo, Entertainment TV, Capital, Here isetc.) had entered into exclusive negotiations with Groupe Figaro (which also includes the daily of the same name and the monthly The particular) for the sale of the flagship title of the French people press.

“If these succeed”the group owned by the Dassault family “must be approved as a buyer by the European Commission”, specifies the press release formalizing the proposed operation.

Vivendi had announced, on April 11, its wish to separate from the magazine of crowned heads and other celebrities. Brussels was in fact threatening not to endorse Vivendi’s takeover bid for Lagardère, already the owner of Paris Matchif their union were to result in an ultra-dominant position in the celebrity press offer.

“Many expressions of interest”

In the press release announcing the European Commission’s agreement to the operation, on June 9, the group chaired by Yannick Bolloré and directed by Arnaud de Puyfontaine assured that the magazine was doing “already the subject of many expressions of interest” – about fifteen, according to an internal source, which did not all result in offers. He also said to himself “confident to be able to finalize” this sale, in addition to that of Editis to International Media Invest, the group of Daniel Kretinsky (indirect shareholder of Monde), “by the end of October”.

This confidence is still in place, said Wednesday’s press release, which recalls that the staff representative bodies will also have to give their (advisory) opinion, after a three-month information-consultation process. Finally, the Bertelsmann group, which owns the license, must also validate the choice of buyer. Once these conditions are met and the sale recorded, an assignment clause will be open to journalists who prefer to leave the company rather than change employer.
