Vivienne Jolie Drops Brad Pitt’s Last Name Officially

On Monday, November 2, a California court officially approved Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt’s request to drop her father Brad Pitt’s surname, joining four of her siblings in legally adopting only her mother Angelina Jolie’s last name, People reported.

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Legal Name Change Details

  • Vivienne filed her name change petition in July shortly after turning 18, citing personal reasons without providing a broader public explanation.
  • She had already been using only Angelina Jolie’s surname professionally, notably credited as Vivienne Jolie in the May 2024 Broadway playbill for The Outsiders.
  • Four of the six children shared by Pitt and Jolie have now legally dropped the Pitt surname, following Shiloh, Maddox, and Zahara.

The Court Petition Filed After Turning Eighteen

Vivienne submitted her paperwork to the California court in July, taking the legal step shortly after celebrating her 18th birthday. Court documents show she pointed to personal reasons for the change and did not issue any wider public explanation for the decision.

The court granted the request on Monday, November 2.

Family Members Change Names After Legal Separations

When Vivienne worked as an assistant on the Broadway production of The Outsiders alongside her mother in May 2024, the program listed her simply as Vivienne Jolie. Her eldest sister, Shiloh, was the first to petition for a legal name change on her 18th birthday in May 2024, with a judge approving that request in August 2024.

Shiloh’s attorney stated at the time that she made an independent and significant decision following painful events.

A Decade-Long Legal and Family Separation

Jolie and Pitt married in 2014 after ten years together, but Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 following an altercation on an airplane. Jolie accused Pitt of physical abuse toward her and the children, allegations which Pitt’s representative denied.

Although criminal investigations concluded without filing charges against Pitt, the separation triggered years of extensive custody and financial litigation. Sources close to the situation noted earlier this year that Pitt faces extremely limited communication with his children and holds hope of eventually repairing those relationships.
