Petra Vlhova relegated the competition to the giant slalom in Are with a show of force. Michelle Gisin misses the podium after a mistake just before the finish and finishes ninth.
Petra Vlhova won the World Cup giant slalom in Are, Sweden, winning the discipline for the first time in a year. The Slovak dominated with a lead of 1.24 seconds in front of the Italian Marta Bassino. Third was the American Mikaela Shiffrin, who as the leader in the overall standings is still 77 points ahead of Vlhova.
Best Swiss was Michelle Gisin. The woman from Obwalden, fourth after the first run, dropped back to 9th place after a time-consuming mistake in the second run. Simone Wild was twelfth and was better classified than in four years in a World Cup giant slalom.
Holdener needs stitches after a fall
With 14th place, Viviane Härri even achieved her best result by far at this level. Andrea Ellenberger finished 19, just like Wild, just missing out on qualifying for next week’s final in Méribel, France.
Wendy Holdener retired in the second run. The woman from Schwyz suffered a cut on her lower leg when she fell, which had to be sewn up. It is not yet clear whether she can compete in the slalom on Saturday.
