In April 2022, a PS5 welcomed a feature particularly awaited by fans: the VRR or Variable Refresh Rate. The principle is simple, on screens and televisions compatible with HDMI 2.1 and VRR, this option allows you to dynamically synchronize the refresh rate of the display on the video output of the PS5 console.

In other words, the visual performance and in particular the framerate are increased by reducing or eliminating visual artifacts such as image tearing. In early 2022, Uncharted 4 and spin-off Uncharted Lost Legacy returned to PS5 as a compilation dubbed Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection.

However, more than six months after its release, the title has just received a new rather important patch. In effect, this update makes the game compatible with VRR. What promise better performance in all display modes? Rest assured, according to the tests carried out by our colleagues at Digital Foundry, this is indeed the case.

Thanks to VRR, Uncharted Legacy of Thieves is smoother than ever on PS5

Until then, Uncharted Legacy of Thieves offered three display modes:

  • Loyalty mode in 4K 30 FPS
  • le mode Performance en 1440p 60 FPS
  • Performance Plus mode in Full HD 120 FPS (only available on 120 Hz displays)

Now with VRR support, gamers can experience better performance across multiple display modes. First, the Loyalty mode goes to 40 FPS, which is a considerable gain of 10 FPS. Note that this mode is activated by default on a 120 Hz screen.

Then, we note the arrival of a new Loyalty mode unlockedwhich rises to 50 FPS en 4K provided you have a 120 Hz screen and VRR activated on your console. According to Digital Foundry, the framerate can go down to 35 FPS at times, but nothing too penalizing.

Regarding the Performance modes, this is where it gets interesting. Indeed, the game now hosts a mode Performance Unlocked. In this mode, the framerate is no longer limited to 60 FPS and can go up up to 90/100 FPS on a 120 Hz screen and VRR activated, all in 1440p. In other words, we are very close to the performance offered by the 120 frames per second mode, but with a higher resolution and image quality (1080p versus 1440p). As you will have understood, if you are the owner of a VRR-compatible 120 Hz screen, we advise you to opt for the Loyalty unlocked and Performance unlocked display modes.
